Microneedling

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Both Microneedling Pen and Microneedling Rollers are forms of microneedling however one is a pen form whilst the other is a roller. They are both used to stimulate the production of collagen by needling the skin. Microneedling causes micro-injuries to the epidermis, which signals the body to produce collagen to remodel the damaged area, which in effect rejuvenates the skin making your skin look younger and fresher and effective treats an array of common skin concerns such as acne scarring, lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, stretch marks, hair thinning and more.

The device is a pen-like device with multiple, fine, vibrating needles which pierce the skin several hundred times per minute to enhance rejuvenation and collagen stimulation and is far safer than other methods. Because the devise is fully adjustable, it is easier to treat delicate areas around the nose and eyes. The treatment also helps to minimise pore size.

What can Micro Needling be used to treat?

Micro Needling helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, tighten and lift skin, treat acne scars and stretch marks. When used on acne scars and stretch marks, it can encourage the skin to heal and rebuild, minimising the appearance of imperfections and evening out the texture of your skin. Studies have shown a 70-80% improvement in scars. The procedure breaks down old scar tissue and stimulates the growth of new skin cells, prompting the body to produce elastin and collagen, both of which are essential to plumper, younger looking skin, as well as new capillaries for improved blood supply. Micro skin-needling is a popular alternative to laser skin resurfacing.

How does Micro Needling actually work?

The device stamps over the skin, it creates micro-point punctures. This controlled damage stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Thus, the skin is tricked into repairing itself. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process. You encourage your skin to continue healing through this Micro Needling process. The process of Micro Needling skin remodelling can go on for months after each treatment.

Is Micro Needling treatment safe?

Very few side effects are associated with Micro Needling treatment. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (approx. 24hrs), rapid healing and requires only simple after-care. Immediately after the procedure, you may find that your skin looks slightly-moderately red and feels tender, much like sunburn, but this should resolve itself within a few hours or sometimes days for some.

We would advise against microneedling treatment if you have an active skin infection, chronic skin disorder, blood clotting problems, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions.

What can I expect during my Micro Needling treatment?

Following on from your consultation, we would start your treatment by cleansing your skin and applying a topical anaesthetic cream for approximately 30 minutes. This will help to numb your skin and make sure that the Micro Needling is a comfortable experience for you. Once the anaesthetic cream has taken effect, we will disinfect your skin and begin the skin needling treatment.

Skin needling is carried out using a hand-held device with a single-use head featuring a number of micro-needles. Each pinprick or microscopic channel is approximately 0.1mm in width, which means that they quickly close over and heal. The device is moved around the treatment area diagonally, horizontally and vertically to ensure the treatment area is covered evenly.

Once the procedure is complete, we will gently cleanse your skin once more and apply cold compresses to close your pores and some serums to help with recovery and your skin’s health.

Does Micro Needling treatment hurt?

The procedure is relatively pain free, with the exception of mild discomfort. You may notice some soreness in the treated area, but this should subside quickly. Depending on the depth of treatment, it is possible to feel a little sensitivity.

How quickly will I see results?

Skin improvements will be seen after just one treatment, however visible results are seen after just 6-8 weeks following procedure and improve further over time. A course of 4-6 sessions are recommended to achieve optimum results.

What do I need to do after my Micro Needling treatment?

You will be given clear aftercare instructions when you undergo Micro Needling treatment at the Clinic. After your treatment, your skin will appear red and flushed; a normal sign that the treatment is working and will subside within a few days. SPF 30 should be worn daily following on from the treatment for at least two weeks.

How often will I need treatment?

We recommend a programme of three to six treatments four to six weeks apart; however, this will depend on your skin condition. Your therapist will devise a bespoke treatment plan, which may include other treatments, to achieve the best result.

What are the possible side effects of Micro Needling?

Common side effects experienced with microneedling will usually subside within 24-48 hours. They include redness, stinging, itching, and tightness of the skin. The skin will be red in appearance, similar way to a sunburn and will also be tight. This will settle down greatly after a few hours and within 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.

Who should not have Micro Needling?

Contraindications and precautions include: keloid or raised scarring, history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions, history of actinic (solar) keratosis, history of Herpes Simplex infections, presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include: scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities, Rosacea and blood clotting problems, active bacterial or fungal infection, immunosuppression, Scars less than 6 months old and facial fillers in the past 6 months.

How is Microneedling Pen different to a DermaRoller?

Microneedling Pen and Microneedling Rollers are forms of microneedling however one is a pen form whilst the other is a roller. Both devices can be used for all areas but the pen can also be used for small, curved and harder to reach areas. It can be used on the face as it is easier to use round fragile areas such as the eyes, nose and mouth. Rollers rely on manual application and are dependent on hand pressure; therefore the depth of the micro point punctures may vary, whereas the pen depth of penetration is set precisely with an electronic dial. There can also be lateral trauma to the skin when the needles on a roller pull out of the skin as the wheel turns, however the pen relies only on vertical needle action so there is no risk of lateral trauma.

Can the Microneedling Pen be used on any skin colour?

Skin needling can be safely performed on all skin colours and types. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. This is then advantage skin needling has over lasers and chemical peels.

The first step of your journey is to book a non-obligatory consultation giving you the opportunity to discuss your area of concern, the treatment you are considering, and your suitability for treatment.

Do not use topical agents that may increase sensitivity of skin: retinoid, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, acids that may be drying or irritating to the skin (such as alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) beta hydroxyl acids (BHA), exfoliating masks, salicylic acids, hydroquinone, and benzoyl peroxide acne products) 5-7 days prior.

Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil for 3 days prior to treatment. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for your skin rejuvenation.

Avoidance of IPL/Laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure or sunburn for 2 weeks prior

No waxing, depilatory creams or electrolysis to area being treated 5-7 days prior

No shaving the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation. If there is dense hair present in the treatment area, closely shave the area the day before you arrive to your appointment. Moles, warts or actinic (solar) keratosis cannot be treated.

If you are prone to cold sores, take antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and day of treatment.

Post Treatment

Preparing the skin for this procedure will ensure optimum results. Healthy skin will respond better and results will last longer. Skin cells need nutrients for best function.

Skin care for pre-conditioning 4-6 weeks prior. The provider will make recommendations if pre-conditioning needed.

For anti-aging purposes, it has a superior effect on collagen and elastin rejuvenation. The Micro-Needles painlessly puncture the skin down to the dermis, stimulating the skin’s fibroblasts which lay down collagen – increasing the skin's elasticity, and in turn tightening, lifting & rejuvenating the skin.
